I wonder if many, or any, of us would even be alive today if Richard Nixon had won the presidential election in 1960. The popular vote was very, very close. I think there's a good chance Nixon and his hawkish friends would have been in favor of attacking Cuba rather than showing a little restraint, resulting in a much higher likelihood of flying nukes.
It's a good thing we'll never know, since the only way to find out would be for it to have really happened.
