There's a lot of links in this post.

To make a short story long:

When I was a volunteer (we actually called ourselves activists) with the Boston Computer Society, an event of theirs that I was heavily involved in prompted me to take part in other events held by other organizations. One of them was an educational software fair that took place at Boston's Museum of Science. Volunteers had to attend an orientation that included a tour of the whole place and getting a t-shirt to wear at the event, which was held on a Saturday.

All of the volunteers at the orientation were adults, but I can't remember seeing any of them at the fair, though I'm sure at least some of them were there. It seemed that nearly all of my fellow volunteers at the event itself were eighth graders from the Edward Devotion School, which was actually really cool because all the ones I talked with were quite awesome.

Then there was this one girl who, while talking to me, complained about WordPerfect being featured at one of the tables, because it's not educational. Her name was Limor Fried, and I don't know if she was a Devotion School student. I encountered her a few more times at BCS events because she was also a volunteer there. Some of the other adults didn't like her attitude, but I liked her and her attitude, a lot, and felt her intelligence was going to carry her pretty far.

Until yesterday, one of the last things I saw that had anything to do with her was this.

And if it wasn't for the fact that Borders Books in Shrewsbury is closing and selling magazines at 40% off, I may never have seen the cover of this month's Wired Magazine and may never have found out where she is today.

That would have been a huge loss.
