Somewhat sort of related to the third paragraph from the end:

The town I grew up in had three Catholic parishes, and one had a school that I went to for eight years. Yes, me! After that, public high school was almost like being on vacation all the time. My first grade classroom was a big room upstairs in the church, which was replaced with a chapel when they added on to the actual school building. The original church then became the Parish Center, whatever that means. The school closed a few years later, and I think for a while the building was used by the public school system.

When the sex abuse scandal was big in the news, that parish was among the many in the Boston Diocese that closed. Now the town has two. The next-to-last time I drove by my old school, the Parish Center was gone and the school building was being demolished. The last time I was there, everything had been cleared away.

Now there's just a sign: Coming Soon... Walgreen's!
