It's pretty much confirmed - they're living under the shed.
Sunday evening we were sitting out on the deck as it was getting dark and the sun-charged lights that we'd put out maybe two weeks earlier starting to come on, one at a time. I'd already told her about coming in out of the dark, and out of the skunk odor, after seeing just the one shooting star on peak perseids night, but seeing the lights coming on reminded me of the first night we had them out.
I was taking out the trash just as they were starting to light up, and I stayed out for a while to see if they all worked (they did) and to see if any skunks came out from under the deck or the shed (they didn't).
Two minutes didn't even go by after I mentioned this, and she said to look next to the shed. So I did, and there were three of them right there, not 20 feet away. She had just seen them come out from under it. I put out the oil lamps and we gathered our stuff and went into the house. And turned on the outside lights. And watched. They were rolling around, digging for who-knows-what, drinking water from a decorative bowl on the clothesline deck, doing all these things that skunks do, I guess. They were acting as if they own the place! I suppose that for all they know, they do.
They were fascinating to watch, and after 15 or 20 minutes it seemed pretty apparent that they had no plans to leave anytime soon. So I didn't take the trash out that night.
