They did it.
Jan. 2nd, 2007 11:59 pmDifferent they. Different it.
On the last day of the session, the Massachusetts legislature voted on the constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. It only needed 50 votes to pass, so even though the majority voted against it, the process advances to the next step anyway. The next step is another vote in the next legislative session, and if it passes again it'll be on the ballot in 2008. So the voters will get to decide something that doesn't even affect the majority of them. In any way. Whatsoever.
This should be good for votes for Mitt Romney in the 2008 primary, which I'm sure is the biggest reason he fought so hard for it to happen. Maybe even the only reason.
For the minute and a half or so that I could stand to listen to talk radio on the way home tonight, I heard the host claim that Deval Patrick is in favor of polygamy and incest. I don't know the governor-elect's exact words, but he did say something to the effect of "people should be allowed to marry the person of their choice." I'm pretty sure anybody with a brain knew what he meant.
