What the hell is taking so long?
Dec. 3rd, 2004 12:04 amToday marks the twentieth anniversary of the explosion and subsequent gas leak at the Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal, India. Estimates range from 2,500 to 5,000 dead that night, and 15,000 to 50,000 since, and over half a million injuries.
The Indian government just announced a cleanup of the site. Twenty years later.
And the U.S. court system is in the process of deciding if Union Carbide's owner, Dow Chemical, should pay for it. The correct answer is yes.
It's a job that should have been completed at least 19 years ago. At least.
I don't know how many people in this country even care, but everybody should. The possibility of a terrorist attack coupled with rampant corporate irresponsibility means that something like this could easily happen here, and sooner or later probably will.
