The Massachusetts legislature
Mar. 11th, 2004 11:50 pmis reported to be voting on an amendment to ban same-sex marriages as I type this. They said on the news that if it doesn't pass this time the issue is effectively dead, but I don't believe it. One homophobe or another will find a way to keep it alive.
And if it does pass, they vote on it again next year. And if it passes again, it goes to the voters in 2006. And if they pass it, the constitution gets amended. Lots of ifs, which is why people on both sides of the issue are saying there's a long road ahead.
Meanwhile, the supreme judicial court's original deadline for legislative action is May 17, after which they supposedly can't prevent the issuing of marriage licenses for same-sex couples. It'll be interesting to see what they try to do about that.
Stay tuned!
